Brunette color and cuts in Bellingham

Color that
grows out softly

Fern Tilden works alone in a quiet suite on Chestnut Street. She colors and cuts so that your hair looks right in week one and still looks chosen in week twelve. Fern is taking new clients, and every first color visit starts with a consultation.

The grow-out guide

How soft color settles, week by week

A rough calendar for root color and soft all-over color. Your own schedule comes from your consultation, because hair and plans differ.

  • Fresh

    Weeks 1–2

The tone is at its richest and the shine is up. Your roots are blended into the length, so there is no hard line.

    • Tone at its fullest

    • Roots softened into the length

  • Settling

    Weeks 3–6

The tone relaxes a little with every wash. A soft shadow starts at the roots, which reads as depth rather than a line.

    • Tone eases toward your natural shade

    • A gentle root shadow

  • Growing out

    Weeks 7–10

Your roots have come in, and because the color sat close to your natural level they stay close to the rest. A gloss now brings the tone back.

    • Roots near your natural shade

    • A gloss between visits is optional

  • Next visit

    Weeks 10–14

A visit every ten to fourteen weeks keeps soft color looking chosen. Gray blending runs a little shorter, closer to every eight to ten weeks.

    • Book the next visit before you leave

    • Closer to week eight if you blend gray

Gray blending

Blending gray, not hiding it

Gray changes how color behaves. Fern softens the contrast, so the roots that come in don't announce themselves.

  • Look first

Fern checks how much gray you have, where it sits and how it takes color, in daylight.

  • Stay near your natural shade

A color close to your own level means new growth sits close to the rest.

  • Lowlights soften the line

Fine lowlights near the part and the temples blur the border between gray and color.

  • A shorter schedule

Gray shows sooner than other roots, so a visit every eight to ten weeks keeps it blended.

Questions

Before your first visit

Do I need a consultation first?

For color, yes. Fern looks at your hair in daylight and goes through your color history before she mixes anything. A cut can be booked directly.

How often will I need to come back?

For soft color, most plans run about ten to fourteen weeks between visits. Gray blending runs a little shorter. Fern gives you a schedule at your consultation.

Do you work with gray hair?

Yes. Blending gray into a soft, natural-looking color is one of the things Fern does most. The approach is on the gray blending page.

How far ahead should I book?

Color visits are booked a few weeks out, because Fern is the only stylist in the suite. Cuts and glosses are easier to fit in.

Where do I park, and how do I get in?

Street parking is on Chestnut Street, and there is a public lot behind the building. Fern texts you the suite's door code the day before your visit.

Can I bring someone with me?

A quiet guest is welcome to wait with you. The suite is small, so we ask for one guest at most.
